Spotlight

7/2/2020
Luke 14:26, 27, 33 “If any come to Me, and hate not…he cannot be my disciple.”

How devoted to Jesus am I? Do these verses mean I must hate? I am called to love others over and over again in God’s word, so how can this be? Are these verses speaking about what I pay most attention to? On what does my spotlight shine? If I am focused on the people around me, my intellect, my talent, my philosophy, or my possessions more than I am on Jesus, I will be an ineffectual disciple. Anything that I make an idol in this life conflicts with my faith and should be shed. I must be willing to give up all, even unto my very life.

Our days are full of inconsistencies, but the one true constant will always be Jesus. Doing His will and spreading the gospel is our true purpose as believers. We grow closer to Jesus by seeking the Holy Spirit, and we become active in that relationship by inviting Him in. Chambers writes, “Whenever the Holy Ghost sees a chance of glorifying Jesus, He will take your heart, your nerves, your whole personality, and simply make you blaze and glow with devotion to Jesus Christ.” Oh, to “blaze and glow” in my devotion to Jesus through Holy Spirit power is such a powerful description. Will I ever blaze and glow so brightly that the love of Jesus shines right out of me? Can you think of a more powerful state of being for such a time as this? Let us not be distracted by the din of the world, but instead be abandoned to Jesus. It’s time to blaze and glow.

Chambers writes, “Men pour themselves into creeds, and God has to blast them out of their prejudices before they can become devoted to Jesus.” Profound words for uncertain times indeed.
