Prepare

Romans 13;11 "Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed."

I was raised Catholic, but have attended Protestant churches since my early 20's. Although I may be a unicorn in this thinking, I hold both in high esteem as they honor and follow the teachings of Jesus from the Gospels. There are differences, yes, but in both I see Jesus as the focus of faith.

Today starts the season of Lent. This 40 day period honoring the sacrifice of Christ is primarily a Catholic tradition, yet it draws me to it. I have had a few different conversations today about how we, as Protestants can also observe this time. One person was skeptical, one person was thoughtful, and one person (who I really did not have a full conversation with) brought up forgiveness. I found this all very interesting and telling. We, of course, all need to follow where God leads, so I am going to focus on the Gospels, forgiveness, and what sacrifice means.

I encourage you all, no matter your church affiliation, to live the next 40 days differently. Whether you give up something, take action positively in some way, or spend more time in the Bible or in prayer; find something that draws you nearer to the Savior. Let us all prepare ourselves to commemorate the most profound and selfless act of love ever taken and celebrate the most joyous event that has ever occurred.

We have been talking a lot this week about these 40 days and what to give up for Lent and all that goes along with these days. For some they were so hard pressed to come up with someTHING to give up. I urged them to instead do SOMETHING for someone - offer their Eucharist up for someone, invite someone to eat with them, include someone in a conversation or an event. We just never know how those things can impact someone and in turn, we are doing what Jesus asks of us. I am looking forward to these next 40 days because the ending is the best of all!!!
