John 16:33 “In the world ye shall have
tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
One of the most powerful verses in all of
scripture, and one that I certainly cling to in times of hardship or trial. We
are living in a sinful and fallen world, which is very evident by looking at
any news source. There is unrest in our country as well as around the world,
and Covid is still wreaking havoc and spreading with reckless abandon. People
are suffering from illness, unemployment, bigotry (of all shapes and forms), natural
disasters, fear, and loneliness. We are all experiencing a time period like we
never have before. This darkness, however, is not new to our world. There have
been many times of great suffering over the centuries, yet the truth of this
verse is unchanging: Jesus has overcome the world. No matter what is happening
in our own world or globally, Jesus is forever and eternally the Conqueror. Sometimes
this is difficult for us to remember when the storms are raging all around us,
but if we focus on God, He will reveal Himself in ways both small and mighty.
Chambers says that God does not deliver us from trouble, but His deliverance is
in the midst of it. He writes, “God does not give us overcoming life: He gives
us life as we overcome.” We are in combat with this world for sure, but with our
holy armor fully in place, we can weather any tempest.
We, as believers, also hold on to the
assurance that this life is not the end. We know that there is more after the
battles of this fallen world are won. We know that Jesus is the Victor, and we
can join together as His warriors while still here on Earth. With His mercy and
grace we can also be overcomers.
