John 17:6
“Thine they were, and Thou gavest them Me”
This part of
scripture is when Jesus prayed to His Father before His betrayal and crucifixion.
He spoke of His disciples and how He gave them God’s words, and He has glorified
the Father by finishing His work on Earth. He prayed for His disciples, whom God
had pulled from the world to follow Jesus. He prayed for God’s protection over
them, and He prayed that they would be sanctified. Verses 17 & 18, “Sanctify
them by the truth; Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have
sent them into the world.” Jesus knew that these men would be hated as they preached
the Good News, even though they did not yet know that this would be their
mission. They were the first missionaries.
Chambers
writes, “Our Lord makes a disciple His own possession, He becomes responsible
for him. ‘Ye shall be witness unto Me.’ The spirit that comes on is not that of
doing anything for Jesus, but of
being a perfect delight to Him. The secret of the missionary is—I am His, and
He is carrying out His enterprises through me.” As believers, we are both
disciples of Jesus and missionaries. In yielding to Him we become His, then
walk boldly in the world by being filled with the Holy Spirit. I should give up
my self-interests and the things of this world, but this is difficult in my
human frailty. However, if I am rightly aligned with Jesus and focused on Him,
He will protect me, fill me with His Spirit, and guide me on my journey. I will
no longer need to fight the world because I am walking with my Savior, and He
has overcome the world. The more He becomes my one reality, the more others
will see Him in me. My purpose as a disciple of Jesus, is to share the truth
of God’s Good News; to be a missionary of the Gospel of Christ. I can do this
either severing in a foreign land or in my own hometown, but I am called to
share the Gospel with any and all who do not know Jesus.
