John 21:17 “Feed My Sheep.”
God calls us to be hands-on every day with
those around us, to feed His sheep. Our motivation to do so is out of our love
for Him, for He is the author of love. We are to be spent for God, and fully
occupied with His leading. I will honestly say, sometimes I truly do feel spent
(I am actually feeling that way right at this moment), but I know the Holy
Spirit will always recharge my battery. For me, quiet time in God’s word,
prayer, and worship are essential components of being refreshed. If I am not
doing these things, I run out of steam very quickly and tend to retreat instead
of act.
Chambers writes that God wants more from us
than talk. “Don’t testify how much you love Me, don’t profess about the marvelous
revelations you have had– ‘Feed My sheep.’ And Jesus has some pretty
extraordinary funny sheep, some bedraggled, some dirty, some awkward, butting
sheep, some sheep that have gone astray!” I certainly am grateful for the love
that was shown me by those who love the Lord, for I am definitely one of God’s
quirky sheep.
I
have to let God lead me in this charge, because my own emotion and humanity will
get in the way. Sympathy should not be a motivator. Instead, I should be
compelled to act by my love for God alone. Judgement or prejudice does not
figure into this act at all, no matter how different other sheep may be. It
also shouldn’t make a difference where another flock is from. There is no caveat
to this directive, it is stated very clearly, “Feed My sheep.” God will give me
everything I need if I follow and trust Him. Chambers says, “It is impossible
to weary God’s love, and it is impossible to weary that love in me if it
springs from the one center.”
I am still working on being fully obedient to God’s commands, and am
so grateful I can access the Source of Love to reach out in love to others.
